How to deal with toxic parents

Trying to raise a child with a toxic former spouse may be difficult for parents in California and elsewhere. However, there are a variety of strategies that a person may use to make doing so easier. For instance, it is important to accept that no one can force the child's other parent to change his or her ways. All a parent can do is change how he or she handles a given situation.

In some cases, it may be possible to see a conflict coming before it starts. In such a scenario, it is up to an individual to avoid that source of conflict if possible. Doing so may help to preserve the mental health and safety of both the parent and the child. Those who are triggered by their former spouses are encouraged to take some time before responding to whatever that person has said or written.

There may be times when not responding at all is the best course of action. If necessary, parents who are feeling frustrated can vent those frustrations to a friend or therapist. It can be a good idea to document instances of abusive behavior or any other times that the other parent has violated the terms of a custody or child support agreement.

Those who are involved in child custody and visitation disputes will ideally act in a calm and mature manner while it is ongoing. An attorney may be able to help parents control their emotions and take steps to maximize their chances of obtaining a favorable resolution. Parents are encouraged to remember that a judge will do what is in the best interests of the child. Therefore, their focus should be on parenting their children as opposed to winning arguments with a former partner.
